Eyes open

It’s nearly time to start ditching the loungewear chic (which, let’s face it, was never chic!) and dusting off your (slightly tight) glad rags as the World begins to slowly awaken from this bonkers year (read 100 years!)

I’m reminded of the Kingdom of Sleeping Beauty when the gallant Prince finally breaks through the thorns of evil and kisses the Princess which awakens her and all of those around her from their 100 years slumber! The evil thorns are our global pandemic and the gallant Prince is the VACCINE!

So, in honour of getting back to “normal” whatever that means, I’m going to be sharing some useful hints, tips and information with you as we all struggle to put our lives back together. Of course, I have plenty of ideas but I’d love to hear your thoughts about any subjects that you want to learn more about.

I’m going to try and theme each month so that information is consistent and you can collect and keep my pearls of wisdom. If you haven’t already, please like my Facebook Page where you’ll be able to see updates and other nuggets of information.

Sticks and Stones…

If you are of a certain age, you will know that the rest of the saying goes like this…

“…may break my bones; but names will never hurt me”

Here, there are two important points to make

Firstly, names can hurt us very much indeed.

Secondly, and this is very important…they can only hurt us if we choose them to.

Ok, let’s look at this simple saying with logic. Sticks and stones can indeed break our bones. We would have no choice in the matter if said weapon or weapons were wielded upon us!

And herein comes the all important word “CHOICE”

We have a CHOICE as to whether names or words are going to hurt us. The very fact that we have a choice means the decision is in our hands and NOT the hands of another.

Change your choice! Choose not to be hurt by idle words.

Regain your power! Like the Superhero you are!

Christmas Survival Guide – Top Tips for the Festive period

As I type this blog, I hope that when I look back on it one day soon, it will seem like a bad dream which is well and truly in the past!

December 2020 is going to be the most difficult year many of us have ever had as we prepare to spend time alone or with only our household family members.

Here are my Top Tips for survival this year…

  1. Get some perspective

As difficult as this year will be for many, we have to try and remember that people have endured far worse and for far longer than us. We are staying apart so that we can be together again, hopefully quite soon. We have hope, there is light! As I type, over 500,000 people have been vaccinated in the UK with thousands adding each day.

Spare a thought for those who have endured far worse in war-torn countries past and present with no end in sight. Losing loved ones and having nowhere to live. Then there are the homeless and the sick who will spend Christmas alone.

Think of your own circumstances and smile! We have much to be thankful for in the Western World at least. We have food in our bellies, TV to binge and our feet to take us on a bracing winter walk.

2. Stop Blaming others

It’s easy to blame the Government or the prime players in your conspiracy theory for what we are all going through.

Use this experience to remind us that as clever as we think we are as humans, we will always be at the mercy of Mother Nature.

Get out and appreciate her! If you’re stuck at home, try a bird watching hour over a warming cuppa to remind you that life does and will go on!

3. Use Technology

There are few households who do not have internet access these days. Make the effort to set aside some time over the Festive period to check in with family and friends, especially those who are alone!

If you don’t have access to technology, or know someone that doesn’t, how about making some home-made cakes or cards and delivering them with a warming message to remind others that they are not alone!

4. Make some noise!

If you have little ones, how about a family walk near where you live. Encourage your little darlings to shout happy messages and see how many people they can get to wave back at them?

Whatever you decide to do, or decide not to do, remember the old saying…there is always someone worse off than you!

All I want for Christmas…How to Survive Christmas 2020

It’s here again, as it is every year whether we want it or not. A time of religious celebrations, family gatherings, precious time with friends, pure agony or simply a pause for reflection before we start a New Year. Whatever your attitude, it’s here nonetheless.

I don’t need to tell you that this year, things are different…very different.

It seems like a lifetime and yet 5 minutes ago that we were celebrating Christmas last year the same way we usually do, whatever that means to you. And for the most part, we were joyously naïve to the collective battle the World would have on it’s hands in 2020.

2020 has been a global challenge, felt by every person occupying our ever shrinking World. We could be with relatives or friends on the other side of the World in hours, dine out with favourite people, moan about spending the day travelling between loved ones. No mention of social distancing, hand gel, Covid-19.

So, this Christmas, my advice to you is stop for a second and instead of simply battling to get through the holiday, waiting for things to get better in 2021.

Stop…

And think…

All of the things that are making us unhappy about 2020 are reasons to rejoice and celebrate. How can you make a difference moving forward? Who needs to know how much they are missed and loved? What changes can you make to ensure that you grab life by the horns and ride free?

And not forgetting those of you who are finding quiet peace in the scaled down festivities. How can you honour yourself moving forward and lose the things that you haven’t missed?

Because know this. By this time next year, our oddly all-encompassing 2020 will be a distant memory but a memory all the same.

How will you make sure that you remember with a smile what 2020 gave you the courage to do?
